NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MUSEUM TO EXHIBIT TOP INTERNATIONAL WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY OF 2006
WASHINGTON (Nov. 6, 2006)–The “Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006″ exhibit will be on display at the National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall from Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, through Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007. National Geographic is the first U.S. venue for the 2006 exhibition.
Now in its 42nd year, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition is owned by the Natural History Museum in London and BBC Wildlife Magazine. One of the world’s premier photo contests, it aims to find the best wildlife pictures made around the globe by photographers of all ages. It is open to both professional and amateur photographers.
The exhibition will feature the winning and commended entries in a variety of categories including “Animals in Their Environment,” “Animal Behavior,” “The Underwater World,” “Animal Portraits,” “In Praise of Plants,” “Urban and Garden Wildlife,” “Wild Places” and “The World in Our Hands.” A new category this year is “Creative Visions of Nature.”
Thousands of entries are received each year. They are judged by an expert panel, and the winners are announced at an awards ceremony at the Natural History Museum each October. The “Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006″ title is awarded to the photographer whose individual image selected from all the entries is judged to be the most striking and memorable.
The National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall, 1145 17th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Dec. 25. Admission is free. For information on the “Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006″ exhibit, the public should call (202) 857-7588 or visit nationalgeographic.com/museum.
