I felt really bad that my sister who loves Harry Potter felt she would never get to see Hogwarts in Florida (Universal studios). SO, to celebrate the new movie I decided on September 24 that we would throw a party. But not just any party, we would convert our ENTIRE home into a Harry Potter themed world! It took four straight days to set it all up, 500 dollars to buy all the necessary foods and decorations, and about 3 months of preparation and planning to make it all possible but I- excuse me- we did it! The party was a great success and everyone went on about how magical and fantastic it all was. The living portraits, the virtual rides, the candy, the wands, etc. I was very pleased with how it all went. As far as seeing the film at midnight goes, it was also very awesome! Had a great time! Let me hear what your favorite part was about the party, and a Happy Harry Potter day to all of you.

Question by alex_adt: Help with Ti-83 calculator !?
Given a rectangular piece of cardboard 28cm long and 21cm wide, cut out four corners to make a box. What size should the cut out be to make a box with maximum volume.

V=l x w x h

V= x(28-2x)(21-2x)

How do I see the sise of the cutout on Ti-83 plus calculator?

On calculator it’s supposed to only show quadrant 1 and a mountain shape.

Best answer:

Answer by hayharbr
Here is what to do: go to y=, and in Y1 enter the equation
x(28-2x)(21-2x)
Then to see the “mountain” you need to fix the WINDOW so go to WINDOW and for Xmin put 0, Xmax put 10, Xscl put 1, Ymin put 0, Ymax put 2000, yscl put 200

You’ll see it!

Question by : Average and Giant Bear Cutout?
I’m gonna to make a average sized bear representation out of cardboard, and the largest bear record as well. Does anyone have any idea how to get the height an weight into dimensions using feet and inches? :D

Best answer:

Answer by thedriftindragon
you can google for the size of the largest bear on record – or estimated size of prehistoric bears. As Grizzlies can stand 10′ tall, i suggest you make your size 1-3″ per foot depending on how large you want your cutout to be – for example a 10′ grizzly would be 10-30″ tall on that scale

The Roboinsects combines a few of Matthew’s favourite things . . . robots, science-fiction, insects, space-rockets, foxes and cardboard . . . all in one place. Matthew Robins has always liked to make things from cardboard and imagines what happens when other worlds collide, like here where the Robots have left their home planet but have got lost and ended up on another planet filled with roboinsects. You can make a cardboard roboinsect too – download it from www.sadlucy.com. print it out, colour it in, glue it together.

Question by Pirateshaveparrots: This question is super super tough, can it be solved?
Just kidding, it’s more on the easy side.

It’s a word problem that I don’t understand how you get the answer:

——-
A box is to be made out of a piece of cardboard that measures 18 by 24 inches. Squares, x inches on a side, will be cut from each corner and then the ends and sides will be folded up. Find the size of the cutout squares that will make the maximum volume. What is the maximum volume? Round answers to two decimal places.
——-

The equation to find volume is V=length * width * height

So the equation should be along these lines: V= x(24-2x)(18-2x). However, when I graph this equation on my calculator I get 8.9 for the width and 11.91 for the length. This can’t be right since you have to multiply those numbers by two and subtract them by 24 and 18.

It would be 24 – 23.82 = .18, and
18 – 17.8 = .2

The answer, though, is x = 3.4

Any help, please?

Best answer:

Answer by StevenC
You have the correct formula for the volume! However, it’s not the graph you will need to consider.

To maximize the volume, you need to first determine the derivative. The derivative will tell you when the volumes are increasing and decreasing.

since V = 4x³ – 84x² + 432x,

dV/dx = 12x² – 168x + 432

set dV/dx = 0 and solve

you will get x = 7±√13

7+√13 is not in the domain (as it would make 18-2x < 0), so the only critical number is 7-√13

this value for x will give you the maximum dimensions (you can use first or second derivative test to verify)

EDIT: 7-√13 ≈ 3.4 (as per your answer.)

Question by heywilco: My baby name rant :) ?
Okay, so I like the name Juni/Junie for a girl, but I’ve been getting a lot of negative comments about it; people saying it sounds too young/too nicknamy/whatever. And I hear that and I’m seriously thinking about it. Cause I mean, I don’t want to screw up my kid, you know?
But here’s the thing; I’ve decided to go with “Juni” over “Junie” to eliminate the “nickname” factor. Writing Junie on a job application, for instance, looks more like a nick name because of the “ie”. But Juni looks more like a real name (and it is a real name, by the way, it’s German). And I think it does sound young, but that’s why I’m attracted to it. It’s meaning is even “youth”. But I’ve decided that I can see the name fitting an adult as well as a young girl. I CAN see “Doctor Juni” or “Aunt Juni”. Some people can’t, I guess, but I actually really can. And I like that it sounds so young and colorful and unique and happy. I can’t say the name without wanting to smile. It just sounds so lovely to me.

So here are the reasons I like the name:

1. It’s different. I don’t want my child to go through life as “Maddie S.” or “Emily J.” When I picture a “Juni”, I picture a confident, funny, UNIQUE kid, as opposed to a cardboard cutout.

2. It’s a German name. My family is very German. I like that it would reflect her heritage. I mean, that’s deffinetely not the most important thing to me, but I think it’s cool that it would reflect her German background.

3. A slightly more superficial reason, I adore the nickname “Junebug”. And yes, I did get that nickname from the movie “Juno”.

4. I simply love the sound of the name. Like I said earlier, it just makes me smile whenever I hear it or say it. And no matter how “different” her name would be, if we love it, we could show her how to love it, too.

5. I would love to have Juni as my name. I hate my name, Sarah. It’s so boring and plain. I want my daughter to stand out.

6. I hate the name “June”, and I REFUSE to name her that. I wouldn’t like it if she started going by “June” permanently when she’s older. I don’t mind it as a nickname, but otherwise, no. We will be naming her what we are going to be calling her. I know there is room for argument from the other side here, but that’s my final reasoning. I have a sister named “Mary Margaret”, and we’ve always called her Maggie. She got teased all throughout school, people called her Mary just to annoy her and she hated that. She legally changed her first name to Margaret this winter.

So yeah. Wow, this turned out to be quite a bit of a rant, didn’t it? lol

You go gurl! I agree with having a name that isn’t totally overused. Name your kid whatever you want.

Question by Lissa: Why is math so complicated?
Okay I was out for a week of school and my mom picked up some of my homework for me and this is one of those STUPID math questions!!!

So-and-So is painting a cardboard cutout for her school’s annual play. The cardboard is a triangle 7 feet tall by 7 feet wide. It has a square opening with a width of 2 feet. How many feet does So-and-So need to paint?

I thought that you would have to find the area of the original triangle without the opening and got an area of 24.5 square feet. Then I thought that you would have to find the area of the square opening.(Which I did) I got and area of 4 square. I thought that maybe you would have have to subtract the two to get the answer. 24.5-4=20.5 square feet.

Correct me if I am wrong because I have no idea. Being sick sure makes everything worse. Me not being in class made me miss what I was learning. Yes, I already knew this, but I am not sure how she exactly anted it done.

Oh well. Please help!!!!!!

Question by rabble rouser: If religious people can generalize gays for the purpose of political gain, then why can’t we do the same?
Mitt Romney doesn’t like being compared to the Kingston Clan…

And I’m sure it wouldn’t be politically expediant if Mike Huckabee were associated with the Westboro Baptist Church…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church

How about associating George Bush with the very church that prays in tongues over a cardboard cutout in his image:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Becky_Fischer

So what makes it ok for these hypocrites to judge my morality when they haven’t even met me?

Best answer:

Answer by Last Ent Wife
Hiya donkey, aren’t you in the wrong category?

You either believe that morality is subjective or objective. I believe it be objective. Morality must come from a source outside of humanity in order to retain a state that is without flaw and lacks any bias.

Question by ❝♔Princess❞Ivy [ Soul made of Gold]™: How is this part? I think it’s goin pretty okay?
I’m finally approaching page seventy but here’s another chapeter ( copyrighted) yes so how would you rate this on a scale of – Good, Fair or Poor. If you rate poor what can I do to bump it up and make it more interesting?( this is also NOT the beginning of my story.) ( It looks like a lot but it’s not)

The next morning, we opened presents. I couldn’t contain my surprise when Lily handed me a finely wrapped gift in silken silver cloth. I carefully unwrapped the parcel, placing the silk next to me. When I finished unwrapping it, lying on my lap was a leather bound book with a beautiful glimmering cross etched out faintly on the front.
Without hesitation, I began to flip to the first page and held my breath as I came to it. The illustrations were the most captivating and most divine I had ever laid eyes on. Each drawing did not, in fact, look like a drawing, but instead a picture. As though I were looking through a tiny window, the images jumped out at me like they were alive, breathing off the very pages, wanting to jump out at me. The first page showed a magnificent garden so beautiful, it made any other prized garden look small and pitiful in comparison . My eyes saw trees of every kind, with soft green luscious leaves, and some even had plump, ripe fruits on them. Animals of every kind could be seen. I felt as though I could hear the birds lost in the canopies of the trees chirping in greeting at me, and the mighty lion on the forest floor gave a loud growl. I could see a twinkling waterfall; the water that fell gracefully off the edge was a light pastel blue.
Flipping the page, I discovered that the title of the story was written out in magnificent calligraphy: ‘God Creates the Garden’. The illustration I had just seen was the garden of Eden — how could I have not known it myself? I flipped through the pages, my eyes stopping occasionally to marvel at the paintings. The pictures of people that I recognized from Bible stories were extremely lifelike. I felt like I could hear the groans and yelling of the men as they labored to build the tower of Babel. I could see the sweat on their faces and feel the hot scorching sun that they had to work in.
When I had finished marveling at the book, all I could do in return was hug Lillian, who burst into tears at how much I loved her present.
Jason had, oddly enough, received a book, too, but it was the opposite of mine. He flipped to the first page of the silver book he had been presented by Xavier. The first illustration was in a way as appealing and fascinating as mine, for the image was one I knew and yet never remembered seeing.
It showed a man, no, an angel, standing tall and proud. He wore a stunning robe of pure gold with jewels of every kind. Some I could name, like opal, pearl, garnet, ruby, sapphire and many others, and some that were so exquisite that I could not name them at all.
His body was surrounded by a glowing, radiant light, and his wings were huge. They were so divine and delicate that they made Lily’s wings look like a cardboard cutout. And I swear that music– yes music — was emanating from his wings. I could hear a symphony so beautiful it made a tear slide down my cheek. All around him stood angels, and each of them had an admiring look on his or her face as they looked up at him.
Jason flipped the page for me, and written in silver calligraphy it said, ‘Satan as an Angel’.
The angel on the other page had been Lucifer. I gasped at this. That had been him? I no longer wished to go through Jason’s book, for I knew somehow that I would be greeted by appealing, but at the same time horrific illustrations.
The day transitioned smoothly to night: now only a day until I would be taken off to school. I spent all my free time packing belongings. Lily told me that I had no need for clothes, as they would provide me with all I needed in the academy. So instead, I packed a few books and family belongings, like an old photo album.
I also spent a lot of time with Alice and Jason. We wanted our brother and sister relationships to always last.
Day became night, and soon I was at my most nervous. I could not sleep at all, so I read a few pages from my book. I got as far as the story of Cain and Abel, but I still could not force myself to sleep.
When I was able to wearily close my eyes, after twisting and turning in my bed so much, I dreamed a memory. A sweet yet sad one.
My mother sat on my bed, tucking me in. I watched the younger version of myself, who maybe seemed about five, clamor for a bedtime story.
“You want a story, Ella? Well then, I have the perfect one for you, and it is a true story, too.” She settled herself on my bed and began the story in a whisper. “Once upon a time, there were three planets. The planets could not be seen through a telescope, because man could not create a strong enough lens, and this universe was thousands of light years away from us.” A puzzled look passed through the face o

Paper Heart

Charlyne Yi does not believe in love. Or so she says. Well, at the very least, she doesn’t believe in fairy-tale love or the Hollywood mythology of love, and her own experiences have turned her into yet another modern-day skeptic.

Follow Charlyne across America as she and her good friend (and director) Nicholas Jasenovec search for answers and advice about love, by talking with friends and strangers, scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and children. They each offer diverse views on modern romance, as well as various answers to the age-old question: does true love really exist? Charlyne’s pursuit to discover the nature of love takes on a fresh new urgency when she meets a boy after her own heart: Michael Cera. As their relationship develops on camera, her pursuit risks losing the person she finds closest to her heart.

Combining elements of documentary and traditional storytelling, reality and fantasy, Paper Heart brings a fresh perspective to the modern romance and redefines the classic love story.A creatively self-conscious comedy that is part real documentary and part, well, something else, Paper Heart begins as an inquiry by artist and comedian Charlyne Yi into the nature of love. Working closely with pal and director Nicholas Jasenovec, Yi travels the U.S. looking for anyone who will talk to her about their experiences with or perspectives about love. Along the way, she meets some wonderful people, including older folks, children, and even a celebrity (Seth Rogen) or two. But nothing shakes Yi’s skepticism that there is such a thing as permanent, romantic love until actor Michael Cera (Juno) stumbles into her on-camera life. Shy but curious about one another, Cera and Yi cautiously hook up, troubled by the omnipresence of Jasenovec and his crew but unable to get free of Yi’s agreement to allow everything to be filmed. The very pressure under which they try to make their simmering relationship work becomes the test Yi needs to believe that love is real–or, at least, cleverly scripted. It’s hard to know exactly where the line is between documentary and fiction in this film, but in a way it doesn’t matter. A point or two is made, and the audience gets to enjoy Yi’s cardboard-cutout puppetry. –Tom Keogh
